For Internet veterans, the word Internet just became too old and common. How could pro Internet users still feel special if *everyone* used the "Internet" thesedays? A new way to seperate ourselves from the onslaught of normal people was needed.
Hence, a new name for the Internet was created - which cleverly combined two existing names into one - teh Interweb!
Telling people that you enjoy "surfing the Interweb" reclaims those strange looks and feeling of alienation that we started to miss.
